Teddy is confused looking at the map. He thinks
they should have crossed a stream on their way to MAVO. Gimmick thinks
maybe it's time they turn North. He does so quite swiftly, sending
Teddy and Grubby scrambling for something to hold onto as the Airship
swerves around the air.
Tweeg and LB are a little lost as well, although
they are following the Airship.
QUOTE-
TWEEG-
"Do I have to do all the thinking around here?!"
LB-
"I'd be amazed if you did any thinkin' at all"
Gimmick advises that the trio should now be headed
into the mountains. Grubby wonders why he hears "the surf" if they're
headed to the mountains. Gimmick says it's probably just a gentile
mountain stream. The trio comes out of the clouds and it's clear they
are over the Sea, not a stream. Grubby says it's the biggest "Mountain
Stream" he's ever seen.
QUOTE-
GIMMICK-
"I Don't understand it, I made this compass myself"
GRUBBY-
"I understand it."
Tweeg is thrilled that the Trio are landing on the
beach for a rest. He muses at how MAVO and his mother will be so proud
of him when he finds the final crystal.
When they land, they see a group of Grunges singing
"Surfin Grundo" and having a great time on the beach. The Grunges are,
like, fascinated by the Airship and are like, totally glad to have met
the trio, but they've got to run because they've got like, some serious
surfin to do.
Gimmick discovers a problem- his compass
lists whatever direction they are going in as south. Teddy is pretty
sure that they're on Ben's beach and that they can figure out the way
to MAVO without a compass. The Grunges can't believe the trio want to
leave the beach, and offer to spend the day with them surfing and
having fun. Teddy and Gimmick get out in the water, while Grubby has a
hard time fitting on the surfboard, and also doesn't like getting wet.
He gets the reducing machine to make the surfboard a little bigger,
slips while pressing the button and causes the ray to hit a wave,
flooding the beach with a giant tide. Instead of being mad, the Grunges
take it in stride, marveling at how "rad" the wave was and the size of
the "intense seaweed". Gimmick says when Grubby enlarged the wave he
also enlarged everything inside of it.
Jeanie says there was only one Grunge ever born that could have ridden
the wave Grubby created- Elroy Tweeg, the coolest surfer they ever
knew. Jeanie muses it's too bad that it's a shame they couldn't say the
same thing about his wife, and then sings a nice little ditty about
Eleanor making Elroy's life miserable.
The grunges laugh at how everyone always referred
to Elroy by her last name, Tweeg. The trio perk up at this news... and
even more when the grunges mention the couple's child's name, Jack W.
Jeanie says she saw a guy that looked like Jack W. Tweeg over in the
grove, sitting around in his "bathrobe" yelling at some round red guy.
Grubby wonders why Tweeg is following them since they already have the
crystals. Teddy remembers that they don't quite have all of them- there
is one left in the Reducing Machine, after all. Grubby and Gimmick want
to leave immediately, but Teddy has a better idea and tells them of his
plan.
After nightfall, Tweeg and LB come out of
the bushes and search the sleeping trio and Grunges for the Crystal.
After bumping into each other a few times in the search, LB finds a
crystal next to Teddy.. Tweeg is so deep into his own search he doesn't
pay attention at first when LB finds it.. after yet another round of
noise perpetuated by LB, Tweeg tells LB he should go back to the tower
and "Play in the cannon". When he finally realizes LB has the crystal,
he snatches it with a sparkle in his eye and they head off into the
darkness.
Teddy opens his eyes and lets the others know that
Tweeg and LB are gone. The group had hidden the real crystal inside a
Grunge's guitar, and Teddy had carved out one of the salt crystals
Grubby enlarged in a wave to look like the real crystal, fooling Tweeg
and LB. The trio quickly packed up and headed on their way, thanking
the Grunges for all their help in the process while they lifted off the
ground to follow Tweeg and LB to MAVO headquarters. While in the air,
Grubby asks Teddy why they even need the rest of the crystals, since
they already have one. Teddy tells Grubby to imagine all the wonderful
things they could do with the crystals and the powers they hold...
Gimmick reminds them also that they wouldn't want that power to fall
into MAVO's hands.
EPISODE REVIEW-
This has always been one of
my favorite episodes. All of the characters are in top form, with the
Tweeg/LB relationship constantly hilarious, the trio being good judges
of character in trusting the new set of Grunges, and the 'good guys'
all banding together selflessly for the common good. They also
had a lot of fun along the way and made the show interesting for the
younger audience with a couple of very colorful songs in this episode.
The trio also gets the best of Tweeg in more ways than one in this half
hour- not only do they fool him with fake crystals, but with Gimmick's
compass broken, Tweeg is inadvertently being their guide to MAVO as he
heads off in the darkness.
The show also ends on a note of quiet suspense, and gets it just right.
