Tweeg is on the roof of his
tower hammering away... after a few moments, the ladder slips out from
underneath him, sending him scrambling for his life and holding on by a
thread to the edge of the tower's roofing. He looks down and sees Mrs.
Maggotheart (The Mavo Bill Collector) approaching his front door. She's
got good news along with his latest bill, though, he's been accepted as
an apprentice member of MAVO. If he gets all his dues paid up, he'll be
eligible for membership at the next membership convention.
Grubby
and Teddy are outside goofing around on the Cannonballs Tweeg has fired
at the yard. Gimmick comes out and requests their help testing out a
new invention...Gimmick explains that he calls it a "Multiplication
Table" and that it is powered by one of the magic crystals.
Grubby
tells Gimmick to try out duplicating an apple for his first expirament
on the new machine. Gimmick puts the Apple under the machine's ray and
it duplicates... a banana. The puzzled Gimmick begins to tinker with
the machine and tries again. This time an Orange develops. Grubby
decides to tinker with the machine himself, freely admitting he has no
idea what he's doing. Gimmick doesnt see any reason not to let Grubby
give it a try. Gimmick and Teddy mess with the dials on the machine and
Gimmick is convinced he'll see an apple this time.
They
turn on the machine again... and several objects appear... they begin
to grow together and it's soon obvious the duplicated object isn't an
orange, an apple or a pumpkin... it's Grubby!
Meanwhile,
Tweeg is expiramenting himself, with yet another recipe to try and make
gold. LB tells Tweeg this recipe better work, reminding him of his MAVO
debt as well as LB's own perpetually unpaid salary. Tweeg sends LB to
steal some flour from Gimmick to replace his recipe and decides to
write his mother a note requesting a raise in allowance. Hilarity
ensues as Tweeg decides what to write;
"Now
lets see... Dearest Mummy... no, that makes her sound too
old. ...Dearest Sweetest Mommy... no, too centimental.
Something more commanding... "NOW YOU LISTEN TO ME YOU HAG FACED
HIDIOUSITY!" ... no that won't work either, she never listens to me."
Tweeg
takes a break from his writing to spy on what LB is doing at Gimmick's.
He sees the two Grubby's outside arguing and comes to the logical
conclusion that Gimmick is now producing an Army
of Octopedes to steal his secret recipe for making gold.
Meanwhile,
Teddy and Gimmick are trying their best to keep the peace between the
two increasingly Hostile Grubby's, who are arguing over which one is
real.
Tweeg
decides to begin firing cannons at Gimmick in retaliation of the
alleged Octopede Army Gimmick is forming. The first cannon goes
straight up in the air and crashes into the new roofing Tweeg has just
installed on the tower.
As
Gimmick is trying to figure out how to solve the problem by tinkering
with the multiplication table, the "Double Grubby" begins to
dissappear, along with the fruit that was created. Gimmick concludes
the molecular structure of the copied elements were too unstable to
sustain themselves for a long period of time.
Grubby is very glad his duplicate has dissapeared, and the Trio begin
singing "I Like Being Myself". Tweeg hears the singing and
mistakes it for laughter at his expense (because of the cannonball)
An angry tweeg loads up
the cannnon with extra gunpowder and fires it, despite LB's warning
that it's too much gunpowder.
As salt on Tweeg's wounds, the cannon explodes, sending remnants of it
crashing to the ground and right on top of Mrs. Maggotheart's wagon.

EPISODE REVIEW-
In the first half of the
series, there are quite a few episodes based on the Book & Tape
"Adventure Series" that came with the toy. Most of the time the TV
series did a fairly decent job rehashing these while also
finding room for the added characters and plot
developments of the TV show. This time I didn't quite feel the
same satisfaction from the storyline that I got from the same
title in "The Adventure Series". The plot was
hurried along a bit to make room for Tweeg's scenes, when in
fact I think they could have easily been written into a
former or further episode. Grubby's conflict with
*himself* isn't fleshed out nearly as much as it could have been.
Because of this, the episode's theme- Like who you are - didn't really
seem to fit the story.
With that being said, It's still great to see two Grubby's, and the
visuals & animation on this episode are a touch higher quality
and warmer than in some previous episodes. Tweeg's scenes are spot-on
and his paranoia and greed are closer to the Tweeg we knew from the
Adventure Series, before he began to evolve a bit and became
overwhelmed with trying to join MAVO.
In a series with 65 episodes
and a continuing plot, however, (Very rare for children's programming)
you're bound to have episodes that need to hurry things along a bit,
and this one seemed to do the job OK. I think this episode
would have been better positioned along with the "Take a Good Look" and
"Grubby's Romance" block than the one it was put in, but It's still a
very enjoyable 22 minutes.
